[6.75/10] Predators (2010)

Predators (2010)

After the travesties that were "Alien vs. Predator" and its sequel we all were extremely hyped that Robert Rodriguez had taken it upon himself to resurrect this franchise from the brink. 33 years after the original "Predator", he (Rodriguez) and director Nimrod Antal finally served up their vision of a true sequel to the classic sci-fi movie. They succeeded, at least for most part. The plot is fairly straight forward and typical - A bunch of badasses find themselves stranded on another planet where they are being hunted by alien Predators. The film started off well with the quick introductions and a bit of action tossed in to keep it from being boring, however the beginning was still pretty slow and the film didn't pick up well until the predator dogs made their appearance. When the action comes, it's very satisfying, both in terms of the choreography and the visceral gore. The production design and the camera-work are top-notch. The camera nicely alternates between claustrophobic and vast, epic shots. The special effects were a breath of fresh air, for they were a good mix of digital and practical effects. The predators themselves, while very few, were wonderful to watch on screen and were as deadly as ever. They provided some cool set pieces and some genuine sci-fi/horror atmosphere. The acting is all good, with Adrien Brody delivering another great performance and showing his diversity. Brody doesn't seem much like an action hero normally, but here he is a pretty believable action star. Alice Braga is as interesting as she is fun to look at. She reminded me a lot of Michelle Rodriguez. Topher Grace and Walter Goggins are the source of comic relief in the film, while Grace's character Edwin provides the main twist towards the film's finale. Two characters that are severely underdeveloped are Nickolai and especially Hanzo, who provides a great samurai sword versus Predator blade fight in the middle of a field. Although, I thought "Predators" needed more Predators and more action, and it lacked dynamic pace, it still was a fun and visually engaging sci-fi action flick, that provided reasonably enjoyable popcorn entertainment.

  • My Rating: 6.75/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 63% (5.8/10)
  • IMDb: 7.1/10

This certainly has its moments as I think it was better than two AVP films of course but overall it is just a mindless summer movie that passed the time okay and will most likely be quickly forgotten.

I have to admit I expected a lot more for this one, and although I liked it, I wasn't jumping out of my chair. It was too talky and it took forever to get to the action.
