QuickRating: Apart from the vivid and absolutely dazzling animated sequences in the beginning, "The Smurfs" has nothing to do with the utterly brilliant TV series from the 80s. This modernized version just does not possess the magic of the mini-series, and it feels contrived and fabricated. The CGI smurfs are adorable, the cast is okay, and the voice work is good, but that can't compensate for a weak script and sub-par execution.

I just don't think I can stomach seeing this turned into a movie. I used to love The Smurfs and don't need that sullied.
Joshua I loved the series as well and I was worried this one won't be on par with the TV show. Sadly, I was right.
I'll wait for HBO or Netflix, and for some night when I'm completely wasted.
Josh, I'm sure they'll show it on HBO very, very soon. It's not that bad actually... it's the story that feels inappropriate for the smurfs as characters.
Still plan to skip. I was a teen when the Smurfs came out, so never got into the show or all the hype.
Alex, I was 6 or 7 back then and I was loving it. The first time I heard there will be Smurfs movie, I was like YAY, but then the trailer came out and killed my enthusiasm.
I went with my nephews to see this and I laughed watching them enjoy it. However, it so not my cartoon and while I love NPH, yeah his character was a bit meh. What a totally ridiculous plot. I agree with your quick-witted and thorough review. The script was very weak and the overall direction was a mess.
Oh that's a bummer! I had a slight feeling it would be a let down but I was hoping that Neil Patrick Harris would be able to save any possible drawbacks. Well I'm glad I didn't see it in theaters.
Mel, it was far from terrible and it had a couple of funny moments, but having seen all the mini-series, I found it mediocre compared to them.
Nicole, Neil Patrick Harris is a decent actor, but as Melissa said above, his character was a bit meh. If you are a smurf fan, give it a shot when it comes out on DVD/Blu-Ray.
I am also a fan of the TV series and was sad to see what they had done to my Smurfs. It had a few good moments, but just didn't make me connect to the Smurfs I know. Looks like another movie is likely to happen.
HorrO, unfortunately, there will be a sequel for sure. Compared to the TV series it was crap, and yet, for what it was, it was quite watchable.
