[5.00/10] A House on the Bayou (2021)

A House on the Bayou (2021)

Quick Review: The isolated rural house location and the intimidating intruders add up to the film's 'creep factor', along with some gruesome scenes later on in the story, but this demonic-ish take on family-reunion-gone-wrong tries too hard to shook by delivering one bonkers twist after another, instead of fleshing out its otherwise well-portrayed characters, besides, the anti-climatic conclusion doesn't do "A House on the Bayou" any favors at all, either.

[5.00/10] The Starling (2021)

The Starling (2021)

Quick Review: Neither emotional, nor particularly amusing, let alone a great blend of both, "Startling" is an ill-balanced dramedy that explores grief of child loss, and how people cope with it in different ways, but it's also about a bird-human encounter turned into an untypical friendship, which despite the dodgy effects, is the best bit about this tonal mess, along with McCarthy's turn as the trainwreck Lilly and the sweet bond she has with the therapist / vet, who Kilne portrays so likably.

[5.00/10] V/H/S/94 (2021)

V/H/S/94 (2021)

Quick Review: A 4+1 horror shorts anthology with trashy picture quality fits its '90s concept, in spite of the irritating corrupt footage effects, the "V/H/S/94" is more miss than hit -- the creepy creature feature "Storm Drain" ends up being the best, "The Empty Wake" is simply boring, the Frenkenstein-esque "The Subject" is technically great, but more bloody than scary, "Terror" is blurry, all over the place and unwatchable, and the narrating "Holy Hell" is okay, but you hardly ever care about it.

[5.00/10] The Unholy (2021)

The Unholy (2021)

Quick Review: A sinister premise with great potential, let down by a sub-par execution, use of same old tired jump scares, and supposed-to-be ghastly images ruined by sleazy CGIs, "The Unholy" benefits from its gifted lead, creates an eerie tone, and reveals an effective twist, but it refuses to dig deeper into Mary's intriguing backstory, nor it delivers genuine suspense or true frights in its sluggish main plot, and the end result is a shallow, tedious and often cheesy religious horror.

[5.00/10] Yes Day (2021)

Yes Day (2021)

Quick Review: A very lighthearted, family-friendly romp with charming cast and pastel-colored visuals that could be enjoyed by kids and their parents alike due to its harmelessly 'anarchic' spirit, "Yes Day" is a jolly comic mayhem with good message that will be mostly enjoyed by the target audience, though everyone else might find it a bit contrived, not particularly amusing, and trying too hard to be fun, and yet there is a sweetness about it that makes it a pleasurable experience.

[5.00/10] Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021)

Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021)

Quick Review: A candy-colored silly romp with easy-breezy feel and vibrant visuals, driven by Wiig and Mumolo's comedic chemistry, even if they are more fun than truly funny, this one is unlike anything you have seen before, but sadly not in a good way, as it sloppily mixes comedy and fantasy, with the jokes being too flat and goofy to evoke big laughs, and the sci-fi bits as ill-fitting as Dornan playing the embarrassing Edgar in a zany, cringe-worthy role.

[5.00/10] Tarung Sarung (2020)

Tarung Sarung (2020)

Quick Review: Part teen romance, part martial arts flick a'la Karate Kid, part cultural drama about religion, traditions, and natural heritage, this one has a typical run-of-the-mill plot about a spoiled wealthy guy seeking atonement for his misbehavior, and it is as cheesy as it sounds, not to say it takes an hour for any action to kick in, and though the training scenes are fun, the actual 'Sarong' fighting is unspectacular, with Yayan Ruhian being the best bit about this Indonesian mish-mash.

[5.00/10] Holidate (2020)

Holidate (2020)

Quick Review: It deserves credit for its fairly original 'no commitment, no sex dating' premise, its plot has a festive feel and 'jumpy' structure, as it leaps from holiday to holiday, and Roberts' charisma lights up the screen every time she appears, but sadly her chemistry with Bracey is rather questionable, and the whole sweetness of their slowly developing yet fun-driven romance is ruined by some crude sexual jokes that never fit in, plus "Holidate" ends in a corny and predictable fashion.

[5.00/10] Rebecca (2020)

Rebecca (2020)

Quick Review: A divine production design, striking locations and pretty leads cannot cover up Wheatley's struggles lift this his rendition above Hitchcock's 1940 original, failing to make the new additions to the story work, as what starts as a beautiful romance set in France, turns into a muddled, bland mystery melodrama devoid of soul that takes too much time to unveil the enigma behind the Rebecca, and when it finally does, it's with a supposed-to-be shocking twist which underwhelms.

[5.00/10] The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020)

The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020)

Quick Review: An oddball, subtle in tone 'small town' horror comedy that is neither ghastly or frightening enough, nor particularly amusing to work as either, and too mild to work as a blend of both, this debut film by Jim Cummings, who also stars in it, has his typical quirkiness written all over it, but it fails in its attempt to balance the beastly murders with the 'inner beast' life struggles of its barely likable protagonist, plus, the climax is underwhelming.

[5.00/10] The Boys in the Band (2020)

The Boys in the Band (2020)

Quick Review: Adding little on both the stage play and the original 1970 film, refusing even to modernize the period it is set in, this unnecessary remake definitely looks good due to its cool retro feel and slick visuals, but the tiny setting, unlikable queer characters, and simplistic plot driven by cheap intrigues and spicy talks makes "Boys in the Band" mostly for LGBT audiences, and not even the 'relevant' all-gay cast can help it feel less false and contrived.

[5.00/10] The Owners (2020)

The Owners (2020)

Quick Review: A messed-up and nasty home-theft-gone-wrong thriller that leaves little to imagination when it comes to violence and brutality, this one delivers on both gore and tension, and the acting is more than solid, particularly by the freaky old couple, but sadly, "The Owners"'s attempt to elevate its simple concept by throwing a few twists is at the expense of its entertainment value, as it gets progressively ludicrous as it unfolds, culminating in a vague, pretty nonsensical finale.

[5.00/10] The War with Grandpa (2020)

The War with Grandpa (2020)

Quick Review: It has a solid cast and brightly crisp visuals, with the Christmas-birthday-turned-a-messy- disaster being gorgeously designed, but "The War with Grandpa" is your typical juvenile, harmless, silly, and predictable 'older vs younger' family comedy without any wit or edginess, and even though some of the tricks Ed and Peter play on one another are mischievously fun, but the film is never hilarious, let alone warm when it desperately tries to be.

[5.00/10] The Secret: Dare to Dream (2020)

The Secret: Dare to Dream (2020)

Quick Review: Basically using its documentary precursor as gimmick, "The Secret: Dare to Dream" has an intriguing mystery up its sleeve that is not easy to predict, but that and the sleek looks and fine cast aside, this adaptation about a struggling single mother finding love neither works as a genuine romance, nor it conveys its 'think positive' message clearly, with the end result being a stodgy, sappy, and contrived drama with no emotional impact.

[5.00/10] Swimming for Gold (2020)

Swimming for Gold (2020)

Quick Review: From the formulaic and predictable a champion-turned- loser-turned-winner plot and typical teen drama to the cheap humor and dodgy acting, this AU sports comedy is an example of lame film-making, and yet, the appealing characters, light, bright, breezy looks and feel, refreshing Queensland setting, and smooth pacing make "Swimming for Gold" a sweet, often enjoyable, feel- good, easy to watch movie that aims to be more of a guilty pleasure than a gold medal competitor.

[5.00/10] Greyhound (2020)

Greyhound (2020)

Quick Review: Visually grim, grey, and soggy, and entirely taking place on a crowded warship in open sea, "Greyhound" honors U.S. Navy and their valor, courage, and struggles by recreating an inspiring true story, and it displays very well technically executed action scenes, but frankly, it is a surprisingly trite and tedious effort, consisting mostly of shooting and shouting, that's more loud and chaotic than thrilling, and even the always great Hanks gets swallowed by all the busy mayhem.

[5.00/10] Outback (2020)

Outback (2020)

Quick Review: Revolving around a US couple exploring Australia during a bad period of their relations, this is on one hand a break up-make up personal drama with not much of an emotional impact, and on the other a survival thriller with your common lost-in-the-wilderness scenario, but sadly, apart from the barren beauty of Aussie wasteland, and a few taut bits of agony, struggle and despair, "Outback" is neither staggering, nor thrilling enough to firmly keep you on the edge of your seat.

[5.00/10] Awoken (2020)

Awoken (2020)

Quick Review: This exorcism indie horror gets an A for effort, as it puts a fresh spin on demonic possession through exploring insomnia, it's also adequately-shot, and led by a pretty spot-on performance by Sara West, but despite that, the morbid setting it takes place in, and some rather ominous old school footage it uses with chilling effect, "Awoken" never manages to be properly frightening, as it relies on jump scares, instead of examining the evil spirit in deeper, more revealing details.

[5.00/10] Scoob! (2020)

Scoob! (2020)

Quick Review: Not only this CGIed version lacks the quirky charms of the cartoon and fails to embody firm bond between Scooby and Shaggy, but apart from some vigor, and an 'okay' villain with cute robo-helpers, "Scoob!" is flimsy attempt at reviving the franchise, suffering from a busy origin story that is too cluttered for adults to enjoy, and too convoluted for kids to comprehend, not to sat the plain, clumsily-executed, rather bad-looking animation doesn't make it very appealing, either.

[5.00/10] Possessor (2020)

Possessor (2020)

Quick Review: High on concept, but lacking in execution, this numb, bizarre, moody, and soulless, sci-fi horror has a very intriguing premise, but "Possessor" tries too hard to be 'clever', but ends up so pretentious instead, as it's too slow-paced and muddled to sustain interest, it goes in no clear direction, leaving many questions unanswered, and fails to provide a satisfactory payoff at the end, plus, apart from all the gore and excessive violence, it has zero shock value whatsoever.
