[7.50/10] Final Destination 5 [3D] (2011)

Final Destination 5 [3D] (2011)

Brief review: The Final Destination franchise had its ups and downs over the years, but the 2011 installment is a true breath of fresh air and, in fact, tons of fun. Plot-wise, "FD 5" brings nothing new to the table, however, director Steven Quale's inventive direction and a few clever twists here and there make up for the lack of originality. The acting is decent from everyone involved, except for Nicholas D'Agosto. He appears a bit stiff in his role as Sam, and not very convincing at all. The rest of the cast is okay, with Jacqueline Wood being the eye-candy, and Miles Fisher - the standout. The visuals are definitely the strongest and slickest in the series so far. The bridge sequence in particular is nothing short of spectacular. The demolition of the bridge is so realistic and superbly-crafted, it feels like watching a tragic event on the news, rather than a horror movie sequence. "FD 5" is all about the deaths though. Every single one of the death scenes is executed to perfection, delightfully gross and in-your-face gory. You'll find yourself covering your eyes and turning your head off, but at the same time, deep inside, you'll be satisfied by the extreme graphicness of it. The 3D is well-used, beyond effective, and certainly adds to the horrific experience.

Overall summary: Although it's basically more-of-the-same, "FD 5" is almost a masterpiece compared to its dreadful predecessor, plus, thanks to its uber-creative death scenes, fantastic gore effects, and great use of 3D, this installment can be easily considered the best of the series.

I have never gotten into the Final Destination flicks. Saw the first two and was bored out of my mind. Talk about dreckitude. They're exactly like Saw 2 through what is it now like 58, with these huge, hokey, elaborate death scenes that have no cool build-up or great dialogue. I just wanted to climb into the screen and kill these half wits myself. Way too much screaming, gasping and crying for my taste. Stop trying to live, just fucking die already. LOL ;)

I think the only reason I tolerated this one was because of Tony Todd, who is one of the most under-appreciated actors working.

So how the hell are you? You don't email, barely stop my blog...Sheesh, what are you, a college student and busy man? :) Seriously, I hope things aren't too stressful and that all is well with you and your family. Hugs!

Mel, really? I've always liked those. The first was so much fun, and the second - my favorite of all. It has nothing to do with Saw, and thank God for that. I love your sarcastic sense of humor and appreciate your opinion, but that one make me stop liking the FD movies. :) Oh, the 4th was horrendous.

Mel, I'm both student and busy. I study for the exams now. 3 of them already past (A, B+, B+), and there are two more ahead. I hope I'll be back on track after Oct 7.

As you can see I barely blog, and have no time to visit other blogs and post comments :( It is what it is...I won't complain. I'll try my best to catch up, hon. Hugs.

Bleh, I thought the 4th film was the last one? These are good for mindless fun, but they're getting old

Kid, just give it a shot and then we'll talk, ok? :)

Hey, if you're going to do gore, might as well go all out.
Saw your comment - glad school is going well. Thanks for taking time to stop by my blog when you can!

Alex, no, I'm the one who's glad. :) School is going really well for me, and hey, I'm the best at English ;)
Your blog is a big part of my blogging life, as is Mel's so stopping by is the least I can do. :)

Maybe I should've caught this at the cinema, it's gone now.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Ricky, it was released two weeks ago in my country, so I finally managed to see it. Almost two month after its wide release, but hey, better late than never, right? :)

Yay for FD5!!
I'm a huge fan of the first 3 parts. Part 4 was quite horrible.
Part 5 gladly goes back to the roots of FD - best sequel so far!

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Maynard, yay indeed! I absolutely loved it! I thought it was on par with FD 2, which I adore. I agree about the 4th one, it was so lame and cheap. I gave it a 3 out of 10. LOL.

Good review. Found you over at Alex's blogfest. I'm paid movie reviewer - always fun to see what others say about movies. I can talk about them all day. =)

Š¢hanks, Shannon, and welcome to my blog! :) That's great, I'm also a complete movie geek.

Paid movie reviewer? Ah, that's what I've always wanted to be. :)

Now if only they could keep the flame alive, I'm sure their planned sixth and seventh would do just fine...I'm slowly nodding my head in uncertainty as I type this...

Kaijinu, people don't realize how original the premise actually is. Genius! This one was the best along with FD2.

After the major let down on the last installment, I had very low expectations for this one, but much to my surprise, this movie was a lot of fun and had some amazing death scenes.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

DTG Reviews, I couldn't believe that the same man directed 2 and 4, because the second was great, and the fourth was absolutely dreadful. 5 is in a completely different league - it's slicker than all the previous four put together, plus the death scenes were superb. ;)
