[7.50/10] Orphan (2009)

Orphan (2009)

Short review: "Orphan" is a movie that uses an old theme. A scary kid who no one believes is evil is in fact the greatest threat to everyone around her. The idea has been used countless times and isn't too original. However, unlike those other movies, this one does stand out for the right reasons. A surprise hit of the summer, "Orphan" is worth watching. The characters in "Orphan" all have interesting back stories, as revealed throughout the plot. The children, in particular Isabelle Fuhrman, are magnificent in their roles. Max being deaf allows for additional dimension to the plot, and Aryana Engineer's performance is terrific, especially at such a young age. Not to mention the fact that she is so precious that my heart almost stopped every time she was put in danger. Farmiga is always solid and is no different here. She is believable as a recovering alcoholic, struggling with guilt that goes way beyond the death of her unborn baby. Sarsgard is sufficient as the overly naive father. And then there is Esther, portrayed quite powerfully by Isabelle Fuhrman! Overall, I enjoyed "Orphan" and think it is one of the better horror films I have seen in a long time. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and while it may offer your standard scary movie clichés, the film takes the genre into a new level with certain scenes in it guaranteed to offer some shock value. I loved the much hyped twist in the movie because it is over the top, just like the rest of the film.
