[9.00/10] 127 Hours (2010)

127 Hours (2010)

Brief review: Based on the real-life story of the mountain climber Aron Ralston, who became trapped by a boulder in Robbers Roost, Utah, for more than five days in 2003, "127 Hours" is an emotional story of fate, hope and despair, that is sure to stay with you long after the credits roll. Despite its predictable climax, it's still a unique experience and unforgettable piece of filmmaking, that is as adventurous and entertaining, as it's claustrophobic and terrifying. Acting-wise, "127 Hours" is basically a one-man-show, but, oh boy, what a show! James Franco turns in an outstanding performance as the adrenaline-junkie climber, Ralston, who's not only physically trapped by a rock, between the canyon's walls, but also mentally "stuck" between harsh reality and dreamy illusions, in his fight for survival. Thanks to his magnetic charm and strong on-screen charisma, he carries the entire movie all by himself. Technically, "127 Hours" is nothing short of impressive! Danny Boyle's imaginative shooting style and vigorous camerawork are to be admired, as uses a very wide range of camera angles, and provide us with some breathtaking panoramic shots, as well as some impressive and intimate close-ups. The 'dream' sequence in particular is wonderfully-executed, and deserves a special mention. Moab's red rock canyon scenery is as stunning, as it's glorious, and it's beautifully-complemented by Chediak and Dod Mantle's sumptuously-saturated cinematography. The amazing music score fits perfectly with the absolutely arresting visuals of this real gem of a film.

Overall summary: A visual and technical tour-de-force, accompanied by James Franco's irresistible performance, "127 Hours" is one of Boyle's most remarkable achievements, and one of 2010's best films.

It's interesting to see that while most people loved this movie, those that don't, REALLY disliked it. Some films are just polarizing I guess.

I don't know a person that disliked this movie. It's so utterly fantastic, that there's nothing to hate about it. Have you seen it, Alex? :) I'd love to see your thoughts on it.

great movie. Its amazing what they did with the concept of just a guy in a tight space. Gruesome in parts but adds to the story.

Great review. I am glad you enjoyed the film as much as I did! I know Boyle's stylistically intense direction can turn some people off. He proved with this film that he can master a tender story; focusing on the humanity of one person without becoming overly sentimental or flagrantly over-the-top.

I can't bring myself to go and see this. The subject matter squicks me. I saw Alive and that was enough to put me off survival films forever. Plus, I'm not that into James Franco. I have not seen him in a film where I have liked his performance. Great review, though. :)

Cpt Pownzor, it was great indeed. It's hard to make such a compelling film out of such a simple premise. But Boyle can make no mistake, obviously.
However, "Slumdog" still remains my most favorite Danny film.

Matt, thanks, pal. I absolutely loved it. And Boyle's dynamic camerawork and zippy editing are just few of the reasons I love him so much. ;)

127 Hours is a terrific accomplishment, and one for which Boyle and Franco deserve joint recognition. It feels like a minor entry into the esteemed director’s oeuvre, but the creative decisions he made showcase his ever-innovative eye for shooting and editing.

Melissa, yes it's quite claustrophobic, but very uplifting and enjoyable nonetheless. You're not that much into Franco? Hm, I reckon he's not only a great-looking guy, but also quite talented as an actor. He does an amazing job in this one!

Jaccsy, it's a terrific accomplishment indeed, thanks to Boyle's skills and inventiveness.

Agree with everything you said. I particularly was impressed with how this movie was shot. It added to the entertainment. I watched this and Buried too close together. Getting me in a depressed mood. I need to watch a cartoon or something!

Thanks, HorrO. Glad you agree with me. You got too claustrophobic after watching these two, didn't you? :) If you need to see a good and refreshing animated flick, watch "Tangled" - it will get you out of your depression ;)
