[5.50/10] TRON: Legacy (2010)

TRON: Legacy (2010)

Brief review: First-time director, Joseph Kosinski, brings this unnecessary sequel to the 1982 'cult classic', "Tron", and despite its stylized update and the supposed-to-be-impressive visuals, "TRON: Legacy" fails to live up to the hype. "Legacy" suffers from the exact same problems as its predecessor - the more you speculate about the film's concept, the more ridiculous it becomes, plus, it takes itself way too seriously, which makes it even more ludicrous. The film lacks wit and humor completely, and it's joyless contains one the most lame dialogues I've ever heard in my life, poorly-delivered by the actors involved. Garrett Hedlund reminds me a lot of Hayden Christensen - he's just as handsome... and just as stiff. Jeff Bridges does a typically good jobs as Sam's father, Kevin Flynn, but he often feels out-of-place and not very interested in what he's doing. Olivia Wilde has a strong on-screen presence and she delivers an above average performance as the stunning Quorra. Michael Sheen is, well, miscast. Believe it or not, "TRON: Legacy" is just okay, visually. "The Games" scenes are the only highlight of this movie, as they're thrilling, startlingly action-packed and brilliantly-executed. However, the lackluster 'neon' visuals fails to represent the so-called digital world, as instead they give a rather gloomy and depressing feel to the movie. The CGI work is skillful, but not exactly groundbreaking. Not to mention the silly costumes and the overly stylish interior, which doesn't seem very appropriate for the world of Tron. At all. Daft Punk's original music score works in the film's favor, but unfortunately, their expertly-crafted, dark and exciting electronic music is not enough to save this lackluster effort from mediocrity.

Overall summary: Dull, poorly-written, badly-acted and surprisingly unspectacular, Joseph Kosinski's "TRON: Legacy" is like a bad club experience - it offers plenty of fancy neon lights, intended pomposity and loudness, but not enough fun and enjoyment.

I really enjoyed this one, probably more than I thought I would. Seeing it in 3D really helped.

Alex, most people did. Well, I didn't. I found it quite silly and unimpressive, even visually. Didn't really care about the 3D either.

I agree 100%. "...like a bad club experience." I love that line. This movie sucked out loud and made me wonder about the inner workings of my computer.

I knew you're gonna love this comparison, Mel :) But, that's really how I felt while watching it. Yes, it sucked big time. No, it didn't make me wonder, it made me laugh :)

Dude, I think you said exactly the same as me, comparing Garret Hedlund with Hayden Christensen! I didn't think it was as bad as you did; It's hardly a classic, but I did find it very entertaining.

They could have done so much more with it.

of course not as brilliant as the original, still I pretty much enjoyed it - though I also understand your point of view

You didn't like it!! Darn. I don't know why but I enjoyed it probably more than I should have. It's weird because I can't really pinpoint what I liked about it. I have never seen the original and didn't really know what to expect so that may be a factor, who knows. I do know that like you, I loved Daft Punks score. It went perfectly with this film! Their music is definitely a favorite of mine.

By the way, I watched "Heartbreaker" last night. I loved it!! It was so good and Vanessa Paradis is a better actress than I expected.

Apparently I was wearing those stupid sunglasses throughout the whole day even inside the bars, I was that a**hole. Hahaha At least I'm a happy drunk but my gawd this is why I don't drink. ; )

I still have not seen this and your review has re-affirmed my willingness to NOT see it.

Thanks for the help!

Russ, really? I haven't read your T:L review, but it's interesting we share the same opinion about Hedlund, isn't it? :)

I did find it completely joyless, and only midly entertaining.

Hot girl, I wish it was nice :) Glad to have you here, by the way ;)

LoneIslander, I agree, they could've... but they didn't :)

Maynard, buddy, I thought the original was kinda lame, but way more enjoyable than this stinker. Thanks, pal. I appreciate your POV too. ;)

Nicole, sweetheart.. no, I didn't. I thought it was so lifeless and unappealing... I hated the previews, and hated the movie. I enjoyed "The Games" though. What you thought of CGI Bridges? It was laughable, wasn't it?:)

I saw "Heartbreaker"? Yey! That's great! So glad you enjoyed it, coz otherwise I would have felt guilty for recommending it. Yes, Paradis was great and almost as good as her husband ;)

Nicole, I thought you looked like the sleeping beauty with sunglasses, so... ;)

Matty, I wasn't sure about it either, but I decided to give it a shot. Well, it was exactly what I expected - a cross between a night club and a video game, just not nearly as enjoyable. :)

Oh, it is so funny you mention that. CGI Bridges was very comical! I mean that I can agree was stupid looking. hahaha : ) And you are too cute! I was hardly a sleeping beauty, you're soo sweet!! ; )

Nicole, I'm pretty convinced that even Bridges himself hated his CGI cloning. He look ridiculous.

Oh, you're certainly a beauty, sleeping or not ;)
