[7.00/10] Amour (2012)

Amour (2012)

QuickRating: Honest, sincere, poignant, and genuinely sad, at times even devastating, the Palme d'Or-winning "Amour" is a quiet film that speaks through the emotions and struggles of his characters, and depicts what true love is, but not in the way we've used to. The heart-wrenchingly dramatic subject matter of the film is exalted by remarkable acting, and Haneke's gentle, if grim direction, consisting of long, dramatic camera shots.

Love, LOVE the new banner! Just thought I would pop in for a quick peak before I head down town. :) The place looks fantastic, hon.

I have not seen this film, but I'll have to look for it. :)

Yay! Thanks, sweetheart. I'm so glad you like the (partially) new look of CM. I worked hard for it. :)

You need to see Amour, but I warn you - it's a sad, sad film.

Certainly one of the worst films to have to sit through from 2012, along with Beasts of the Southern Wild and Les Misérables.

Rating: F+

The plus is because he finally snuffs out her life with a pillow, allowing the movie to finally end.

Shane, I couldn't disagree more.
Amour was quietly devastating and beautifully acted. The ending was very impactful, at least for me.

BOTSW was average at best, and I have yet to see Les Miserables.

I agree with you 100% about quietly devastating and beautifully acted. I also agree that the ending was impactful--I understand where her husband was coming from. How difficult, yet necessary it was for him to do it.

Where I guess we disagree is how any of those things above make for an enjoyable viewing experience. It was boring, slow, depressing, dark, poorly edited, and sad. Not how I like to spend an evening.

Shane, I see your point. The fact that I gave it (only) a 7 out of 10 means that I wasn't that blown away either. On the other hand though, you can't expect a film like this to be enjoyable... you just can't. :)
Amour is meant to be slow, sad, dark and depressing, and no one should expect it to be something else.

By the way, do you really live in Japan? :)

While I can respect the notion that this film, and many others like it, are not made with the intention of being enjoyable popcorn flicks, my ratings *are* based on my level of enjoyment. I watch movies to be entertained, not see how much suffering, sadness, and darkness I can suffer through.

The thing is, I believe a film can be all of these things while being entertaining as well. Amour was not.

I have been living in Japan for about a year.

Shane, then you should stop watching films like this, and pay more attention to the more "joyous" flicks. There are plenty of those.

I, personally, was captivated by "Amour", and liked it for what it was, because I didn't expect to be entertained by it in a cheap way.

It's hard to know for sure whether a film will be "like this" in a bad way, or in a good way, until after you've seen it. Also, I wanted to see all the films nominated for a major award this year.

Then watch all these Oscar films at your own risk. :)
