[4.00/10] The Cold Light of Day (2012)

QuickRating: Unoriginal, derivative, and short on creative ideas, "The Cold Light of Day" fails miserably to set itself apart from the bunch of similar films we've seen thousand times before, and although Henry Cavill and the rest of the cast try to do their best with the lame script they've been given, they can't make up for the countless weaknesses this poor movie has. At least, being shot in Madrid, Spain, it has a nice scenery and decent visuals.

Think I'll just skip it.

George,

Did you get the idea that Cavill will make an excellent Superman, based on his performance in this (otherwise dull) movie....

Cheers!

Alex, that is a smart decision. :)

B2B, to be honest, I kind of like Henry Cavill, and think that he'll make a great Superman. He's got the looks, the talent, and the charisma, so... I think he's going to shine. At least I hope so.

Superman adaptations have not found much success for a long time, with the first 2 Christopher Reeve movies and Smallville being rare exceptions.

With Chris Nolan overlooking the project, I have high hopes for Man of Steel. My only concern is Cavill himself. He has never exuded the kind of leading man charisma, an actor needs to pull off Superman. This is true of Immortals and he is kind of bland in the trailer for Man of Steel also.

B2B, I'm more excited about the fact that Snyder directs it rather than Nolan produces it. Don't get me wrong, Chris Nolan is a legend, but I think Zack Snyder's style is way more expressive.

Cavill definitely LOOKS like Superman, but I'm not sure if he's capable of carrying the weight of such an iconic character. I think he has a strong screen presence, and don't find him bland at all. Well, we'll have to wait and see. :)

I think Cavill was outstanding in the trailer for Man of Steel. I don't understand how anyone could think that he was bland in that trailer. I was worried when I first heard that Snyder was directing. I love him, Dawn of the Dead and 300 are epic, but Watchmen was awful. Then again, that whole story just never appealed to me. The "super" heroes were all neurotic, self-absorbed shitheads.

Mel, not sure the word outstanding is appropriate in this case, because the trailer was way too short to judge Cavill's charisma and acting skills, but yeah, I liked him too.

You thought Watchman was awful? You've got to be kidding me... :) This one probably the most unique superhero movie I've ever seen. Loved it! Snyder one of the coolest directors out there, I think. The only Snyder film that didn't really blow my mind was Sucker Punch... but I still liked it.

I absolutely could not stand Watchmen. I could not even think of them as heroes. They weren't even anti-heroes to me. Seriously, that whole world is just one I did not like at all. Something about it was too bizarre and I found myself bored for the most part.

I finally saw Sucker Punch and did not like it. I thought the acting was subpar and I did not like the cheesecake costumes the girls were wearing. Women, despite what men think and say, do not ever imagine ourselves scantily clad like that. Nor would we realistically imagine ourselves in a brothel. Especially when we have been abused. We would imagine instead, full on armor. Which Snyder would have known had he bothered to research abuse victims for realistic reactions. This story was supposed to be in Babydoll's mind, from her POV, but it was strictly a geek boy sex fantasy and I was disappointed.

Mel, in my opinion the whole point of Sucker Punch was, that when you win the battle in your head, that helps you win it in real life too, which all made sense to me. Yes, this film was overly stylized, but hey, that's Snyder we're talking about, and we all know he's not a fan of the 'less is more' philosophy.

As for Watchmen... well it's supposed to be an anti-hero film, and that's exactly what it was. The superheroes in it were flawed and humane, with all their weaknesses and strengths. The vintage vibe of the whole thing made me like it even more.

...but as you often say, great minds do not always think alike. :)

That's right, our brilliant brains do not always travel the same path and that is awesome. Part of why I love you so much. :)

Mel, I know, hon.. I love you too. :)
