[7.75/10] Jane Eyre (2011)

Jane Eyre (2011)

QuickRating: Darkly captivating, thoroughly absorbing, elegantly shot and as beautiful as painting, Fukunaga's emotionally impactful and marvellously crafted adaptation of the classic novel, "Jane Eyre", fascinates the viewer with its authentic atmosphere, picturesque scenery, moving story, subtle yet ravishing cinematography, and the absolutely superb portrayals by two of the biggest stars of 2011 - the uber-talented Mia Wasikowska and the brilliant Michael Fassbender.

I'm going to take your word for it and see this one. I love the story, but most of the movie adaptations have not been good. It's on the list.

farawayeyes, this one is by far my favorite Jane Eyre adaptation, and one of the best book adaptations ever made. Truly captivating and beautifully acted. Give it a shot, I think you won't be disappointed.

Happy New Year!! A very good adaptation of this novel, though it really is difficult to read and watch the Brontes sisters' work. Their tales are so psychotic and brooding and depressing, I feel like I'm trapped in Sylvia Plath's Bell Jar. LOL

Michael Fassbender is a terrific actor, though I am not so sold on Mia. She's kind of flat to me and this performance was no exception. I thought Fassbender outshone her in every way possible. I had to look up her name every time I talked about the film because she simply faded into the background for me. Had to do the same with Alice In Wonderland. Here's hoping she'll get better, in her interviews she seems very nice. Terrific review, though.

Happy New Year to you too!

Mel, I agree she was kind of dull in Alice in Wonderland, but in The Kids Are All Right, her acting had improved vastly, and think her performance in Jane Eyre was her BEST so far. In other words, she's potentially great. That's why I called her very talented, and not an amazing actress... because she has the goods but still has a lot to learn. I won't even bother discussing Fassbender's brilliance. :) I'm dying to see his Shame.

This was definitely the best Jane Eyre adaptation so far. :) Thanks for the compliment, hon.

I am dying to Shame, too!! I cannot get enough of this man and thank God he's working like mad, LOL.

Mia has more working coming in 2012, so I may yet see something that will make me appreciate her skills. She is in Albert Nobbs and Restless and has Wettest County coming.

OMG, I totally forgot about Albert Nobbs, which I saw a couple of weeks ago. She was quite good in it as well. Check out for yourself. :)

Oh wow, you make this sound worth seeing. I have had this one in the back of my mind but have been hesitant to actually watching it. I couldn't even tell ya' why. However, I think I will have to rent this one now!! I hope you had a wonderful NEW YEAR!!

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Bonnie, you definitely should. It's arguably the best JE adaptation so far. Thanks for the comment. :)

Nicole, I wasn't sure about it at first, but I ended up really impressed to be honest. It was as pretty as a postcard, and Michale and Mia rocked it. HNY to you too, sweetheart! :)

So many have fallen short, but I'll give this adaptation a try.

Nicole, yes many adaptation felt short, but this one succeeded. :)

They showed the trailer for this right before "A Dangerous Method" which perfectly set the tone.

Highly interested in this one. Had to read Jane Eyre in school and thought it was pretty great.
Besides, I love the cast - Fassbender is an amazing actor and Wasikowska is quite a beauty.

Harry, I'm not sure that this would be your cup of tea, but if you enjoy period dramas, you'll love Jane Eyre.

Kinda jealous that you was able to see A Dangerous Method already. It won't be released in my country, so I should wait for the DVD.

Maynard Morrissey said...

Haha, you're right. Usually I'm not into period dramas, but this one definitely interests me, especially for the above-mentioned reasons.

btw, love the new look of your ratings!!

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

It's beautiful and somewhat haunting. Give it a shot!:)

THANKS for noticing, Harry. I spent the entire day designing those new star ratings, and I'm more than happy with the end result. I wanted something simple, yet catchy. :)
Always hated the old ones... they were quite poor-looking and didn't match my 0.25, 0.50 & 0.75 extra stars. Glad you like the new ones! :)

Once again, like with The Tree of Life, I totally agree with your opinion on this movie.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Lesya, once again, thank you. :) It seems we're on the same boat regarding movie tastes. :) Well, except for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. :)
