[4.25/10] The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)

The Twilight Saga:
Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)

Brief review: The Twilight saga is getting worse and worse with each next installment, and the lifeless snoozefest "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" is yet another proof for that. The first half of the movie is terribly slow, overly-sentimental, romantically-corny and mostly boring, while the second half is more dramatic, action-packed, and a tiny bit more watchable. Not sure if we should blame the source material or director Bill Condon for this mess, but either way, the latest entry in the insanely popular franchise is just plain cheesy. The movie is full of unintentionally funny moments and ridiculous dialogues, and even though acting has improved slightly, the wooden Robert Pattinson and the stiff Kristen Stewart still look awkward together on screen. Unlike its terribly-filmed predecessor "Eclipse", "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" is at least technically well-shot and edited. Edward and Bella's fancy wedding is every teenage girl's dream, and the romantic scenes on the breathtaking Brazilian island are beautifully-captured. Having said that, Bill Condon's direction feels a bit lazy and somewhat lackluster, and it's hard to believe that this is made by the same director behind the fantastic "Dreamgirls". And don't even get me started with the silly-looking CGI wolves...

Overall summary: Slow, sappy and annoyingly tedious, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" may be the best-looking installment in the franchise, but it's also the most boring one. The Twilight fanatics might enjoy it, but the rest will howl with rage and disappointment.

Haven't seen one of these beyond the first. The world of Twilight just makes no sense to me because Edward is not really a vampire and Jacob is a shape shifter, not a werewolf. Meyer never bothered with her folklore research.

Plus, Edward is an obsessive pedophile. I mean he's 104 and goes to high school over and over and over again trolling for little girls. Eeeww!! At least Dracula went after grown women. Then we have Bella, one of the weakest females ever created in the history of literature and film. Meyer should be horrified for making little girls think it's okay to kill yourself over a boy.

Then we have the acting. This trio of paper doll stars should keep making films together simply because they make each other look good. Apart they are a total disaster. Especially Lautner. Big Foot has more screen presence than that guy.

Excellent summation, sweetheart. I'll tweet this as a warning. You know the L.A. Kings hockey team were specially invited by the studio to the film's premiere and they walked out en masse after the first twenty minutes along with some other invited guests. Now that's a bad movie. :)

Now that's what I call a great comment! :)
The truth is I kinda liked the first movie. It wasn't good or anything, but it was entertaining to say the least. Disliked the second and hated the third, and this one as well.
I still cannot believe how popular this stupid franchise became among teenagers. What exactly they like like about it I have no idea.

Lautner is a terrible actor, but I'd prefer watching him rather than Robert "Dead Face" Pattinson.

A pedophile? OMG, I haven't thought of that! You're right, it's gross. LOL.

I second Melissa's comments! Someone that age should want a woman, not a child.
You brave man, George. Took one for the team with this review.

Alex, I'm so proud I survived it, it was really boring.

Ah, and Edward... What a pervert, right? LOL.

Pretty much what I expected. After the first about 20 minutes of the first Twilight movie, I about puked. I haven't been the slightest bit interested in the books, or the movies. Just watching the previews makes me shudder.

......dhole

Donna, first of all, thanks for the follow. :) I wanted to follow back, but the link of your blog does not appear on your profile.

Not necessarily a Twilight hater, but I didn't like any of the movies, maybe except for the first one. Wasn't good either, but it was fairly watchable.

I thought as much.

Ricky, so you hated it as well?

I've never seen any of them but I've heard this is the worst. The back to back filming of the sequels may come back to haunt then if the next one bombs.

Maurice, I've seen them all, but I'm not proud of that at all. :) I don't think they're shooting the sequels back to back, but I might be worng.

Ha, nice. Fabulous review as always!! You are spot on. As you know I am sadly a fan of this cheesy franchise even with the many obvious flaws however this particular installment wasn't the best, which is pretty bad since none of them are top notch. I was really hoping for better since Condon was involved. As for those CGI wolves they were HILARIOUS! I mean I was laughing in the theater because they were so bad and people were looking at me like I was crazy, apparently they were uber serious fans.

Additionally, Melissa is completely right. It is a bad message to send that it's okay to kill yourself over a boy. Never saw it that way. Bella is actually a pretty pathetic character when you think about it.

Well overall I'm really glad you attempted it. : )

Thank you, Nicole! :)
I thought it can't be worse than "Eclipse", but it actually was.
Condon disappointed me as well, I expected a lot more from him.
The CGI wolves were so lame, I couldn't stop laughing either. Especially the scene when they gathered together for a meeting or something. I felt like I was watching the Alpha & Omega animation. LOL.

Bella is a poor, deluded girl, and I feel sorry for her.

Oh my word im scared of leaving a comment on this one George ha ha.

I am a Twilight fan, a real guilty pleasure of mine. I have read the books too.

I enjoyed the second outing the most, and do agree that breaking dawn part 1 is certainly not the best one (probably the least) but I did enjoy it, and think they were saving most of the action for the final outing.

Twilight is certainly a Marmite of movies, you either love it or hate it, I'm one of them that will probably forgive all it's flaws just because I love the dynamics of the franchise so much.....though bound to be an unpopular decision amongst my readers.

Demps, I know you're a huge Twi-hard, and I respect the way you feel about it, but hey, it gets worse and worse with each next installment. Enjoyed the first a lot, hated the other entries.
