Best to Worst Found Footage / Mockumentary Horror Movies Part 4: The Best

HALLOWEEN SPECIAL!

[REC] (2007)

Experience the true fear with the Spanish 'found footage' horror phenomenon "[REC]" - the most inventive, unpredictable, shocking, tense, scary and utterly claustrophobic movie in cinematic history. Prepare to be blown away by its terrifying brilliance and bone-chilling climax!

My Rating: 10/10

Thanks to its chillingly-original concept, pitch-perfect execution and mind-blowing visuals, "The Troll Hunter" is an absolute mocku-masterpiece and one of the most unique horror movies ever.

My Rating: 9.25/10

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

It won't be a lie if we call "The Blair Witch Project" the mother of all 'found footage' horror movies, because back in 1999 it showed us all that a movie can be SUPER-scary and effective, without featuring any gore, blood or creepy images.

My Rating: 9.25/10

[REC]² (2009)

Unexpected, brain-twisting, creative, scary and fantastically-gory, "[REC]²" is an absolutely brilliant sequel to an amazing original.

My Rating: 9.00/10

Cloverfield (2008)

Wonderfully-crafted, highly-entertaining and edge-of-your-seat thrilling, "Cloverfield" is a one of a kind 'found footage' horror that delivers everything it promises.

My Rating: 9.00/10

Paranormal Activity (2008)

The triumph of "Paranormal Activity" is in the fact that it's made for so little, but has the ability to terrify so many. It works on so many levels, and is scary enough to make even the most hardened horror buffs wince in fear!

My Rating: 8.25/10

Oh my gosh, Nebs, I was going to have to seriously kill you if you didn't like [REC] or Cloverfield! *sigh of relief* I also thought [REC] 2 was an amazing sequel, and Paranormal Activity was a surprise - the only thing I didn't like about it was the fact that Micah looked and acted like a douche. Couldn't stand that guy.

Michele, are you kidding me? :) I adore both [REC] or Cloverfield. [REC] is my all time favorite horror movie, and it'd top any of my horror lists if it fits in the subject.

[REC]2 was brilliant as well, and also very unexpected. :)

Thank you for the comments, sweetheart.

I must see REC. I have been wanting to see it. I know I am a little behind but I guess it's never too late. Paranormal Activity is creepy. That one still haunts me from time to time. Might have to watch it tonight since it's officially Halloween. Plan on doing a Horror movie marathon so your list will be very handy tonight.

Nicole, you should definitely see [REC]! The last 10 minutes of the film are so terrifying, you'll be on the edge of your seat the whole time, and your heart will be pounding hard. It's that good.

"PA" was a breath of fresh air into the horror genre. It did so much with so little, if that makes any sense.

I'll be glad if some of your Halloween pick are inspired by my list. :)

Mel, I know you're a Cloverfield hater, and I agree that the characters were a bit dull, however I was connected with them and I hoped some of them will survive. Well, they didn't. :)

And, yes, REC is a masterpiece!

Interesting. Cloverfield made the list. Didn't think of that one. Definitely REC, and Blair Witch. Blair Witch didn't scare me in theaters. It scared me more when I went home and thought about how it ended. Nightmares. As I said before, PA pissed me off. It belongs here only because of what it started. Again, great idea, and list!

HorrO, of course it made the list. It was so well-made and entertaining. I loved every bit of it.

REC is THE BEST!

Blair Witch scared the crap out of me. It was soo tense and creepy.

The first PA movie shocked the world, including me. I believed every minute of it.

Thanks, I've been planning to do this list since a while and thought it will be perfect for Halloween. :)

TROLLHUNTER just popped up on Netflix Instant Streaming, and I just need to find time to watch it.

Joshua, give it a shot then. I think you won't be disappointed. Hey, and hurry up, before it gets remade. :)

I knew Troll Hunter would be on this list! Glad Cloverfield was as well. Really dug that film.

Alex, of course it will be on the list... it's just so damn good. :) I dug Cloverfield as well. It was great!

Can't say I disagree here at all, but I have yet to see TROLL HUNTER. I did get to see both BLAIR WITCH and CLOVERFIELD in the theaters, though. A friend rec-ommended REC to me back when it came out and said more or less the same things you did. So when the Spanish DVD with English options hit, I couldn't snatch it up fast enough; ditto for REC 2, the latter of which I did review.

The main reason I found QUARANTINE boring was that it aped the scares from the original in such a way, they came off stale and the build just didn't feel the same for me. But yes, the ending of REC up in the top floor of the apt. building was the most intense finale I think I've ever witnessed.

Brain, I'm glad we agree about those films. You should definitely give Troll Hunter a shot - it's the most unique horror movie I've seen in a while, and the Norwegan scenery is just breathtaking. "rec-ommended", huh? Clever! :)

"ending of REC up in the top floor of the apt. building was the most intense finale I think I've ever witnessed." - ABSOLUTELY! I was shaking in my pants and my heart was pounding hard. In fact, that's my all time favorite scene from a horror movie! :)

Very glad to see Troll Hunter up there towards the top; the more I think about that film the more I realised how much I enjoyed it.

I've never seen the REC films, but since I started blogging I've heard a lot of good things about them. I shall have to check them out.

Russ, Troll Hunter is my second favorite founf footage flick, standing right behind [REC]. I enjoyed every minute of it.. it was a unique and exceptionally well-crafted Scandinavian horror.

You should see both [REC] films, they're pretty amazing, especially the original!
