Movies Everyone Else Loved And I HATED [Part 2]

Thanks for all your comments on Part 1, guys, really appreciate it. It's time for Part 2... and for further disagreements. :)

Movies Everyone Else Loved
And
I HATED

[Part 2]

The Last Samurai (2003)

As you may know, I'm a huge admirer of Asian culture, martial arts, weapons, etc, however I found "The Last Samurai" to be the sappiest, cheesiest and ridiculously over-dramatic samurai film I've seen in my life. It was beautifully-shot, but the story was too Americanized, often absurd, and it played out more like a soap opera, rather than a true samurai movie. And Tom Cruise... completely miscast!

Saw (2004)

Well, I'm officially one of the biggest "Saw" haters out there. I thought the original was poorly-crafted, ugly looking, terribly-acted, 'cold', repulsive, and lacking in atmosphere, thrills, chills and scares. Plus, it featured arguably the most shockingly ridiculous and downright laughable twist ending ever put on film. Call it a self-torture, but I've watched all its sequels, only because I was curious to see how much worse it can get.

30 Days of Night (2007)

I actually couldn't believe how pathetic this movie was. It had a rather cool premise, but 'thanks' to David Slade's incapable, unimaginative and pretty amateurish direction, "30 Days of Night" ended up as just another mediocre, uninspired and badly-executed vampire flick, that has only few thrills and even less chills. Even though Mr. Slade is only 42, I think he should already retire.

The Hangover (2009)

How this painfully unfunny piece of crap won a Golden Globe for Best Comedy is still a mystery to me. I would be grateful if someone can tell me what's funny about a bunch of complete idiots, drinking tons of alcohol and doing stupid things in Vegas? Nothing! I also hated "Old School", which automatically puts Todd Phillips on my list of "Worst Directors Working Today". And the sequel made near $244 million at the box office? My God, where is this world going?!

TRON: Legacy (2010)

I hated the previews, and hated the movie. I thought it was dull, lifeless, unspectacular, and the whole premise was so ridiculous. Let's not forget to mention the silly costumes, and the terrible CGI cloning of Jeff Bridges. Like I said in my review, "TRON: Legacy" is like a bad club experience - it offers plenty of fancy neon lights, intended pomposity and loudness, but not enough fun and enjoyment.

I hate any torture porn, so Saw is out for me. 30 Days of Night had potential until the letdown ending. Sorry, I did enjoy Tron:Legacy though. And I think most people didn't like it.

Alex, Saw was horrendous. 30 Days of Night - very disappointing
I know you liked TL, but that's okay with me. I think everyone loved it, apart from me :)

Last Samurai might have been good, had they had the courage to kill off Tom Cruises character.

I watched 30DoN as part of a halloween movie-a-thon where we also watched Doomsday and Sweeney Todd. So, my thoughts on it might be skewed towards good as the other two films were much worse. Doomsday was the better of the other two.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Budd, it could have been, but it wasn't. Well-said, they should have killed Cruise's annoying character.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen "Doomsday" yet, but thanks for reminding me. :) I'll give it a shot.
I thought Sweeney Todd was brilliant actually. Huge Burton fan here :)

Whoa, I really enjoyed The Last Samurai. Perhaps, because I am an American, I found it quite inspirational. And that's coming from someone who also closely admires the work of many great eastern directors.

And The Hangover was hilarious. I saw it with a group of friends (I had a few beers) and we laughed our asses off. Phillips approach was somewhat refreshing, but the best part was the discovery of Galifianakis (though now, his schtick is running its course to the point of obnoxiousness).

But I respect your opinion and your takes on The Last Samurai and The Hangover are certainly not farfetched.

Doomsday is awesome!

Hmm... I agree on Samurai. Tom Cruise is not my favorite actor and I feel he gets miscasted a LOT! lol

Never had any inclination to see Saw or The Hangover. Can't stand the Saw films, the previews just don't do anything for me. As for Tron, well my husband would disagree, but I'm not a huge Tron fan to begin with.

30 Days of Night wasn't too bad, in my opinion anyway. But it did seem like it could have been done so much better with all the hype around it. I laughed more than jumped but then again, I'm a Horror Movie freak and laugh when I think the movie sucks. ;)

Awesome post! Can't wait for more!

Nebs, you're killin' me! But even though I like Saw a lot, I do fully understand the hate in terms of the production quality and yes, some of the acting left a lot to be desired! The background of the film and the filmmakers however is so inspiring to me, and what really draws me to it.

completely agree with Hangover. Couldn't really figure out why everyone thinks this one is the bees-knees. But then again.....I'm not an alcoholic.

LOVED 30 Days of Night. It was a lot of fun. Brought the monster back to vampire thanks to years of dismal fantasy vamps like Edward. You know I hated Tron Legacy, Saw was pretty bad and The Last Samurai was meh. I really wish that someone else had played Tom Cruise's character.

Love, love, LOVE Time Burton. XD And yes, seems we do have similar tastes in movies.

Saw 1 AND 2 are just amazing!

30 Days Of Night - a mediocre and overhyped vampire flick. Yet, a masterpiece compared to the horrible 2nd part.

Hangover - funny and brilliantly entertaining!

Tron: Legacy - a fantastic-looking, highly enjoyable and very worthy sequel to the amazing original.

I'm afraid I'm one of the ones who loved Saw but I'm with you on 30 Days Of Night, that was terrible.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Matty, you did? OMG, and I found it to be pretty absurd. Aside from the amazing production design, it was hideous.

The Hangover was everything but funny to me, and way too moronic for my taste. I hated it.

I don't expect anyone to agree with me, Matty. The title of the list suggest that :)

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Erich, I'll certainly give it a shot than. Thanks for the recommendation ;)

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Caledonia, well it seems you're right up my alley, when speaking of movies, which is great! :)

Not a big fan of Cruise either, and I liked him only in his role in Minority Report. It was a very appropriate role for Tom, and think he did a good job.

Saw and The Hangover are equally as terrible :)

30 Days of Night wasn't the worst film ever, but I thought it never lived up to its potential, and wasn't particularly scary either.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

@TheGirlWhoLovesHorror

I kinda expected that reaction from you, coz I know you love "Saw". As far as I remember, we previously talked about it :)

I'm not familiar with the background of the movie and its creators, and I don't think I'm really interested in it, as I obviously hate the movie. :)

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Markus, glad you agree with me on this crap. It was so idiotic, I couldn't stand it.

Oh, you definitely don't look like one :)

Welcome to my blog, by the way. Glad to have you here.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Mel, I didn't think 30 Days was horrible, I just thought it wasn't NEARLY as good as everyone claimed.

Yes, we both hated Tron Legacy, which is great :)

And I wish someone would have killed Cruise's character. He was super-annoying.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Caledonia, so do I. He's a true visionary and a mastermind! Can't wait for his next movie. :)

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Maynard, Saw 2 was a notch better than its predecessor, but still pretty awful. I HATED the original, and laughed so bad at the end, when Jigsaw stood up from the floor. It was hilarious.

Yeah, I agree... I hated the STV sequel to 30 Days too.

Hangover - painfully unfunny and brilliantly dumb. :)

I hated both, the original and the sequel, sorry. Fantastic-looking? Yeah, maybe... if you like being depressed :)

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Ricky, most people did. I don't hate torture porn, I just hate Saw. :)

30 Days of Night should have been called 30 Days of Boredom. Meh!

I couldn't finish LAST SAMURAI, at least not yet. I found it somewhat offensive the way it gave the impression Japan needed Tom Cruise to restore order to the country. I was mainly interested because one of Japan's biggest stars, Hiroyuki Sanada, Sonny Chiba's most famous student, was in it.

30 DAYS OF NIGHT lost me when the vampires began speaking Klingonese. Check the TALES FROM THE CRYPT episode they ripped off the premise from, Nebular, if you haven't seen it. It's much better and only 30 minutes in length.

I saw SAW in the theater and liked it a lot, actually. I think they should have stopped after part three, though.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

enom5, so that means you hated The Last Samurai? :) Yay! I had to finish it, because I was at the theater with 2 of my friends and I couldn't walk out just like that. And, yes, exactly - that was very absurd! Cruise became a samurai in an year, and the Japanese, no matter hoe dedicated they are, can't become samurais in a 10. How ridiculous is that?!

30 Days left a bad taste in my mouth... I just hated the direction and the overall execution of it.
Do you know the name of this episode you're talking about, Venom? I shell check it out for sure.

I'm glad I didn't see Saw in the theater, because if I have I would have hated it even more. Part 2 was okay though. They should have stopped making it after the first sequel.

venoms5 said...

Sure, it's 'Comes the Dawn' from season six. Michael Ironside is in it.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

vwnoms5, thanks buddy. I'll try to find that episode. ;)

Maynard Morrissey said...

I don't understand what you mean by saying 'if you like being depressed', regarding Tron.

Do you consider Tron to be depressing??

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Maynard, exactly. :) I found it to be quite depressing, mainly due to the lackluster visuals and dull performances.

Maynard Morrissey said...

Really? Weird.
To me it was the exact opposite: uplifting, entertaining and far from being depressing.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Maynard, and to me... it wasn't. It left bad taste in my mouth and I just didn't find the neon visuals to be very appealing.
