Numerous QuickRatings PART 8: Foreign Horror Movies

Captifs a.k.a. Caged (2010)

QuickRating: This French torture porn flick may be brutally realistic, extremely graphic, violently gory and nicely-acted, but it suffers from a cliched premise, unimaginative execution, and lack of actual thrills and chills, plus it often feels like a rip-off of another French gorefest, "Frontier(s)".

My Rating: 5.50/10

Zwart Water a.k.a. Two Eyes Staring (2010)

QuickRating: Moody, monotonous and unnecessarily overlong, yet gripping, enigmatic, incredibly atmospheric and beautifully shot, "Zwart Water" proves that Dutch horror film makers are also capable of delivering decent horror movies, despite their lack of experience in this area.

My Rating: 5.75/10

Die Tür a.k.a. The Door (2009)

QuickRating: More of a mystery thriller rather than a horror, "The Door" is a one-of-a-kind experience about parallel realities in life, that dazzles with its uniqueness and unpredictability, and drives a plot that delivers suspense and intrigue, but unfortunately, it falls apart in its final act and quickly loses its efficiency.

My Rating: 6.75/10

I didn't watch the first two, but I did manage to catch The Door previously. Agree with you that it isn't horror, but I thought of it a little better than you did.

Not by much though. Haha.

I've not watched any of those.
Hey, the Troll movie will be on HDNet in a few weeks, so I'll finally get to see it!

J-Son, I liked it a lot, but I thought it went out of control in its second half, that's why I didn't give it a higher rating. ;) I think an American remake would be a good idea.

Alex, all three of them are decent, especially "The Door".

The Troll Hunter? Really? yay, finally! I'm so glad you'll have the chance to see it. Are you going to review it after that?

I think I need to dive deeper into the foreign horror scheme. I always want to but I have trouble trying to make my friends watch it with me.

The Door sounds like a very intriguing film. The whole "parallel realities" concept has me sold plus I really enjoy mystery thrillers.

Nice reviews!

Hey, a new Frenhc horror flick? Excited!
Don't matter if it's mediocre - I'll watch it anyway :)

Don't the French know torture porn is passe now? Slice and dice horror needs a new infusion. I'm sick of pretty girls getting hacked up in their lingerie. I'd make exceptions for a couple of overexposed actresses, though. ;)

Doesn't sound like you were too enthused with this particular crop of films either, hon, even though you gave them decent star ratings. Still, they were well-executed short reviews. :)

Lonelslander, I'm very into foreign horror flicks - they've always been much more intriguing, different and interesting to watch than the American ones. Subtitles don't bother me at all!

Matty, it IS very intriguing - the "parallel realities" concept was presented in a very unique sort of way. I wish it had bigger budget and more experienced director behind it.

Thanks, dude ;)

Maynard, you haven't heard about it? I've been excited about "Captifs" since the day I saw its teaser trailer, but sadly, I ended up not liking it that much :( I still think it's watchable though.

Mel, French torture porn films rarely include pretty girls, and they're much more realistic and believable than the American ones, and yet, that doesn't make them good, if you know what I mean :)
I agree 100% that this sub-genre needs a new infusion!

I wasn't very enthusiastic, because I expected much more from all these 3 flick, and though none of them was bad, my disappointment showed through my (mini) reviews.
