Nolan, Cameron, Tarantino, Jackson, Burton, Fincher. AWESOME! Also loved to see Verbonski and Eastwood in the honorable mentions. They all are great directors.

Yes, yes, yes, yes! :) Are you familiar with Zhang Yimou, Lesya? If you see two or three of his movies, you will realize why did I put in on the top :)

Lesya said...

I saw his Curse of the Golden Flower only.

Some of my favorite directors!

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Lesya, both HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS are MUST SEE, as well as some of his earlier films, such as "Raise the Red Lantern", "Ju Dou" and "To Live".

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Alex, really? :) I'm so glad to hear that :) Who's your most favorite?

Zhang Yimou also happens to be the man who directed the Beijing 2008's Opening Ceremony! There's lots to like about this list, so many great directors. Great list George! =)

An impressive list that includes some of my very favorites. I especially love Snyder, Burton, Jackson and Tarantino. I see you gave Del Toro an honorable mention. :)

I think I would agree with all the way there; except that I am not so familiar with Zhang Yimou. I have seen House of Flying Daggers (looking at the DVD box right now), though it was a while ago; I don't remember it being that memorable (paradox?)! Sorry. Maybe it's time I watched it again.

Glad to see a mention for Paul Verhoeven there, I think Black Book is an amazing film.

Obviously I'm a newcomer here; just like to say that I'm really enjoying your blog.

Great list buddy! I am glad to see some non-mainstream names near the top (Zhang Yimou, Zack Snyder and Ang Lee for instance). Your compilation is definitely reflective of your enormously well refined movie tastes (as I'm sure you can admit to having seen a gazillion movies). My only point of curiosity—I do not see any of the formative, precursor-level filmmakers. Guys like Sam Fuller, Howard Hawkes, Sam Peckinpah, or anyone from the French New Wave (which inspired Tarantino and most of the talented directors of today). Despite this one contention, pretty awesome list!

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

J-Son, I so know that, but thanks for mentioning. ;) In my eyes, no one's better than Yimou. He's pretty amazing, as are all his films. Thanks, mate. Glad you found so much to like here :)

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Thanks, Mel! :) After a year or two, I reckon Snyder will be one of the most successful modern directors. No, I didn't only gave a honorable mention to Del Toro. He's actually on 6th place on that list :) He's absolutely incredible!

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Russ, you should definitely get more familiar with Yimou. He's an exceptional directors and the greatest visionary ever! Re-watch "Daggers", and you will realize its greatness. Pay attention to the dancing scene and the bamboo forest scene - they're both spectacular! Oh, and if you haven't seen "Hero" you should do it.. like... right now! :) It's the most visually stunning film ever made!

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Matt, thanks, mate! And, yes, I've seen thousands of movies :) I'm not very into the classic old-school type of directors like those you've mentioned. As for the new wave French directors, I reckon the only one who deserves to be on my list is Jean Pierre Jeunet. Yes, I like Francois Ozon, Alexandre Aja and a few others, but I don't think they're good enough to make my top 20.

Both, Yimou and Lee are such an incredible filmmakers, that mainstream or not, they deserve a huge credit for their work! Snyder is my favorite newbie. This man can do no wrong! :)

"enormously well refined movie tastes" - oh thank you for that! :)

So you did! My bad. Blame it on the cold medicine. :)

Nolan is my # 1. I like Fincher too. As for Zhang Yimou, I like House of Flying Daggers, but I didn't get Hero, I watched it a long time ago, so may be I need to refresh my memories.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

It's ok, Mel, no worries ;)

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Minoccio, Nolan is a exceptional director, no doubt about it, but I like both Yimou and Fincher a lot more.

Excellent list! I can tell you picked out your favorite directors carefully. All these directors are just excellent. Keep it up!

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Hufstader, thanks, mate! I appreciate it! :) I really did pick them very carefully - there's nothing random about it ;)

Jaccstev said...

Most of them are also my favorites as well :) But I would like to add Peter Chan in my top 10 directors. I favored his entry "Going Home" in "Three" and was pleasantly surprised by "Perhaps Love" and "The Warlords". Extremely can't wait for his upcoming wuxia feature "Swordmen" :)

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Jaccs, glad to hear that ;) Unfortunately, I've seen far to little of his films, so I can't judge him as a director properly. Anyway, I'm excited about "Swordsmen" as well :)

Christian James said...

though unfamilair with a few of them, I like many in your list of part 1 and 2. James Cameron, Danny Boyle, Christopher Nolan and Tim Burton being my favourites. Great lists

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Thanks, Christian. Glad you liked the list ;) This has got to be your first ever comment on my blog, right? :) Is Dempsey gettin' better?
