[7.50/10] Piranha 3D (2010)

Piranha 3D (2010)

The original "Piranha" movie might be cheesy, but it still remains a timeless horror classic. And I predict the same fate for this 3D version of talented French director Alexandre Aja, simply because "Piranha 3D" is the real deal - one of the funniest, goriest and insanely sick horror films of the past few years! Aja never shies away from gore and gross death scenes and this film is yet another proof. And that's not all - "Piranha 3D" keeps its male viewers amply occupied with acres of gratuitous nudity. The story is simple (but who cares) - an earthquake opens a fissure in a lake near the desert resort of Virginia Beach, releasing huge numbers of prehistoric piranha that had been confined to an underground cave for the preceding two million years. All this this occurs during Spring Break which allows for colossal amounts of nudity and the opportunity to watch huge numbers of obnoxious frat boys and empty-headed hot girls who get turned into fish-feed. With decent pacing and never a dull moment, "Piranha 3D" is most definitely the extremely fun film that fans have been waiting for ever since the very first teaser trailer, and it delivers exactly what it promises. The death scenes are actually really gruesome and sometimes quite creative, and the gore effects are surprisingly well-made and very effective. CGI on parts works well - sometimes convincing, sometimes not that much. The Piranhas themselves are flawed and a bit too cartoonish, but they still look ferocious and truly scary. The acting is two dimensional as it needs to be, but if you go to watch this you are not expecting Oscar worthy performances. All of the actors do a great job of establishing their characters and run with what they have. Elisabeth Shue works well as the face of the law trying to keep order during chaos, as well as fun cameos by Eli Roth, Richard Dreyfuss and Christopher Lloyd. And of course, England's own Kelly Brook is glorious in this - Legendarily hot and naked, plus she's very sympathetic character here. Offering buckets of blood, campy humor and huge amount of nudity, Alexandre Aja's "Piranha 3D" is one of the funniest and most entertaining films of the year so far. A great example of how a horror remake should be done!

  • My Rating: 7.50/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 75% (6.3/10)
  • IMDb: 6.8/10

Yeah, it's not Out of Africa, folks!
I'll miss the 3D, but I plan to catch this on NetFlix.

The perfect fun summer film. A lot more variety with the kills than I was expecting, not just piranha chomping. And Richard Dreyfuss's cameo was amazing!! I laughed out loud when I saw him, it was fantastic!

I concur. I mean, it’ll probably be a blastity blast to watch with friends, one of those movies that you would never say was good, but you enjoy it anyway.

Alex, the 3D wasn't exceptional, but still pretty good. See it on big screen. You still have chance ;)
