[7.50/10] Machete (2010)

Machete (2010)

Based on a fake trailer from 2007 "Grindhouse", "Machete" finds the title character, a renegade former Mexican Federale, roaming the streets of Texas after a shakedown from drug lord Torrez, played by Steven Seagal. Reluctantly, Machete takes an offer from spin doctor Benz to assassinate McLaughlin, played by Robert De Niro, a corrupt Senator. Although not as great as Rodriguez/Tarantino's double-feature, "Machete" delivered everything it promised - stylized violence, over-the-top action, tons of blood and solid amount of nudity. The film never took itself seriously and that worked hugely in its favor. Behind all the racism and patriot bullshit was a story with heart that was told with bullets and machetes. Robert Rodriguez co-directed and co-wrote "Machete" and put his stamp all over it. From beginning to end, "Machete" didn't fall short of delivering a deadly dose of non-stop action and cartoonish gore to the audience. It has a great sense of humor and makes fun of the political themes in a gory and over-the-top finale which is hilarious and satisfying. The style and mood of the 70's exploitation films was here and I thought the filmmakers did a good job trying to bring that back. The cast was very gimmicky, but of course the film was a gimmick itself, so it worked. Danny Trejo was born to play Machete hands down. Jessica Alba was enjoyable as an ICE agent - eye-candy, but lacking in acting ability. Robert De Niro seemed like overkill for a part that could've been played by any competent actor. I'm not a fan of De Niro, so I really didn't care about his character. I found Steven Seagals' character to be pretty annoying. In fact, I've always hated Seagal - he's not only one of the worst actors in film history, but also too clumsy and sluggish to be an action star. Lohan, on the other hand, played the part flawlessly. Overall, while the film is a notch or two below director's previous effort, "Planet Terror", "Machete" is a classic Robert Rodriguez loaded with guns, women and violence, that is wild, crazy and enormously entertaining.

  • My Rating: 7.50/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 72% (6.4/10)
  • IMDb: 7.7/10

Lohan played a rich druggie - now that's a stretch! But her gun toting nun was a hoot. Thoroughly enjoyed this flick.

The 'rich druggie' role did fit her like a glove! :) Glad you enjoyed it, Alex. I did too. Hey, I can't wait for Top 10 TV shows blogfest next Monday! ;)

I knew the movie would be pretty decent, but had a feeling that Lohan's much-hyped "nude" scene would turn out to be total BS....
Am I right?

It was something more than just decent, in my opinion. Lohan's nude scene wasn't memorable at all. Yes, she showed some flesh, but nothing special. She was a sexy nun though ;)
