[5.00/10] The Fourth Kind (2009)

The Fourth Kind (2009)

Short review: I had high hopes for "The Fourth Kind" and wanted it to be great. It wasn't. The movie jumps right into the rough and surreal scenario for Alaskan psychologist Abigail Tyler. Coincidental reports by Tyler's patients give a vague but convincing description of extra-terrestrial encounters. "Real" footage, shown in sketchy quality, will leave you idealizing on the actual possibilities of abduction and encounters. It's an interesting concept to utilize a mockumentary style within the horror genre, but here it feels gimmicky and the execution is too sloppy for it to be effective. In terms of thrills, you might gasp or jump at several points, but nothing too major to force you to look away. Actually, you might be stuck glaring at the revealed footage, curiously trying to depict whether it is real or just nonsense. At least there were some decent actors, but they aren't given very good material and often go way over the top in trying to create tension when there really isn't much going on. All in all, "Fourth Kind" has its eerie moments and decent thrills, but it never really rises beyond that.

  • My Rating: 5.00/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 18% (4.0/10)
  • IMDb: 6.3/10
