[7.50/10] G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)

Short review: To think analytically about "G.I. Joe" is like looking for the meaning of life in a fortune cookie: Sure you could do it, but it's a waste of time. The film appears to have one goal which is to be the equivalent of a two hour roller-coaster ride and for the most part it succeeds.First, the storyline storyline itself is 'smart' for this type of adrenaline-filled action movie. It is one long storyline that starts at the middle, then goes back to the beginning with the efficient uses of flashbacks and it finishes off with all the questions answered at the end. This way, you'll keep guessing throughout and the twist is also great. Next, the action and visual effect is really fun to watch. The editing is neat and camera angles are superb. Some scenes might not be as realistic as others but that is okay because it makes the movie looks like a real live-action cartoon. There's plenty of choreographed hand-to-hand and sword fights, shoot-outs and an awesome car chase scene where the Joes are trying to stop the Baroness from destroying the Eiffel Tower – and the Joes are not even in a car. The acting, honestly, is nowhere near great. It's cheesy and awkward most of the time. But it fits because it gives the movie a B-movie feel to it. Super-evil villains trying to take over the world, a great leader, a wise-crack, add in some philosophical lines, silly one-liners and scientific jargon nonsense and it will spell 'Fun'!

Overall summary: If you're seeking a fun, action-spiked, filled with testosterone movie that you just want to watch, laugh, be awed by the visuals and just want to turn your brain off, relax and enjoy, then "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" is just the thing.

  • My Rating: 7.50/10

We'll have to notch this one up an agree to disagree. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I still found nothing to care about throughout the film.

I love your non-cynical approach to reviewing movies ;) It's very refreshing to see someone being objective when talking about all genres.
Thumbs up! :)

PS I fully agree with your view of GI JOE.

You didn't find nothing to care about, because there was nothing to care about! :) G.J. Joe was a mindless entertainment as most of Sommers' movies are. It was fun to watch, exciting and very dynamic! Pure popcorn flick!

Thank you so much for the compliment, Dez! :)
I'm glad you found that refreshing!
I know I gave a higher rating than this film deserves, but I really really liked it! :)
